Full Recap
In the scorching deserts of Aswan, a terrified family arrives at an isolated house hiding a horrifying secret beneath the floorboards. A mysterious woman known only as “The Magician” leads her husband underground to inspect an ancient sarcophagus. The moment the coffin is opened, something inside SCREAMS awake. In the chaos, a metal hook tears through the husband’s jaw, killing him instantly. Whatever is trapped inside the coffin is alive… and hungry. Meanwhile in Cairo, journalist Charlie Cannon lives with his pregnant wife Larissa and their children, Katie and Sebastian. Their lives seem normal until Katie meets a strange girl named Layla near their home. Soon after, The Magician approaches Katie and offers her a nectarine. But inside the fruit is a scarab beetle that crawls directly into Katie’s mouth. Moments later, Katie disappears without a trace. Her devastated family searches desperately, but she is gone. Eight years pass. The Cannon family is completely broken by grief. Charlie’s marriage is hanging by a thread, Sebastian has grown distant, and Larissa still refuses to give up hope that Katie might return someday. Then suddenly, they receive an impossible phone call from the embassy. Katie has been FOUND alive. When Charlie and Larissa rush to the hospital, they discover something horrifying. Katie was recovered from inside an ancient sarcophagus by archaeologists in the desert. She looks pale, skeletal, and partially mummified. Worse still, she barely speaks or reacts. Her body twitches unnaturally, and she only makes faint gasping noises. Still, her parents are overwhelmed with relief and bring her home. But almost immediately, disturbing things begin happening. Katie violently headbutts Larissa’s mother during a prayer. Her toenails have grown grotesquely long, and when Larissa attempts to trim them, entire strips of skin peel off her leg. Katie begins stabbing into her own wounds without feeling pain. At night, strange clicking noises echo through the house while Katie stares motionless into darkness. Charlie slowly realizes this is NOT really his daughter anymore. As Charlie investigates, he notices ancient bindings wrapped beneath Katie’s skin. He takes samples to a professor who translates the inscriptions. The wrappings are not preserving Katie… they are imprisoning something inside her. The ancient entity is known as “The Nazarenian,” a demonic force transferred from body to body over centuries. Human hosts act like living cages, and children are preferred because their bodies survive longer. Soon Charlie notices Katie tapping and clicking her teeth rhythmically. Then it hits him: Morse code. Before she vanished, Katie learned Morse code in the Girl Scouts. Decoding the sounds reveals a single repeated word: “Layla.” Charlie reconnects with Detective Dalia Zaki, the investigator who never stopped searching for Katie. Together they trace Layla back to the desert house in Aswan. There, Dalia discovers the horrifying truth. Layla is now an adult woman whose tongue was cut out by her own mother — The Magician — to stop her from revealing the ritual. Dalia also finds recordings showing exactly what happened to Katie years earlier. The tapes reveal that Katie was kidnapped and forced into a dark ceremonial ritual where The Nazarenian was transferred into her body from another dying host. The scarab beetle and the wrappings were part of the possession process. Katie never truly escaped. She became a vessel. Back at the house, the demon grows stronger. Katie manipulates Sebastian into removing more of the sacred wrappings from her body. With every layer removed, The Nazarenian gains more control. Soon the demon fully unleashes itself. Katie’s body twists unnaturally as she attacks the family with terrifying strength. Charlie is smashed bloody during the assault, while Dalia is nearly killed when a scorpion is forced down her throat, bursting through her neck. Desperate to save his daughter, Charlie realizes there is only one way to stop the demon: someone else must become the vessel. While Dalia recites the ancient incantation from the tapes, Charlie restrains Katie and willingly allows The Nazarenian to transfer into HIS body instead. The possession succeeds. Katie finally begins returning to normal as Charlie becomes the new imprisoned host. The family locks Charlie inside the sarcophagus to contain the demon. Even while possessed, he taps Morse code from inside the coffin: “I love you.” Katie slowly reconnects with her family, seemingly free at last. But the story is not over. In the final scene, The Magician sits imprisoned in a cell. Larissa arrives alongside the recovering Dalia and the possessed Charlie. Larissa reveals she intends to end the nightmare permanently. They sedate The Magician and prepare the same ritual once more — planning to force The Nazarenian into HER body forever. The film ends before the ritual’s outcome is shown, leaving the terrifying possibility that evil may never truly die… it only changes hosts.
