The eerie and twisted horror series Hell Motel kicks off in the fall of 1995 with a brutal double murder at the Cold River Motel. Newlyweds Caitlyn and Joey arrive for their honeymoon but are quickly turned into victims when a masked killer strikes. The horror begins with a warm welcome from motel staff Shirley and Floyd, followed by a champagne surprise that ends in a gruesome death. Caitlyn, unaware of the events, returns from the bathroom just in time to face the same killer.
Fast-forward 30 years later, the Cold River Motel reopens with a disturbing twist: it's now a true crime-themed experience for horror fans. But as the guests check in, it becomes clear that not everyone will be checking out.
The motel is now owned by Portia and Ruby, a couple eager to capitalize on the macabre history of the place. With no cell service and only Wi-Fi for live posting, the atmosphere is isolated and ominous from the start.
Paige is clearly shaken upon return, having played Caitlyn in a film years ago. Her trauma resurfaces quickly, especially during dinner when the in-house celebrity chef, Hemmingway, serves dishes resembling human organs and even offers his own blood as a drink. Things spiral from theatrical to disturbing fast.
Later, a storm forces an elderly couple in an RV to seek shelter on the property. Though initially turned away, they are allowed to stay in the parking lot. But it doesn’t take long before chaos breaks loose.
After a staged chase scene with Ruby in a killer’s mask (a publicity stunt gone too far), the guests are rattled. Tensions peak when Hemmingway is found brutally murdered in the sauna. Things go from bad to worse when the RV explodes, revealing that the elderly couple are actually Shirley and Floyd — the original killers from 1995.
In Episode 2, the focus shifts to panic, paranoia, and planning. With the storm trapping everyone inside and transportation cut off, the guests begin to suspect one another — especially Ruby, who was last seen wearing the killer costume.
As it turns out, Floyd and Shirley are not just retired serial killers — they’re Satanists, waiting for the perfect celestial alignment to complete a ritual that started 30 years ago. But they didn’t kill Hemmingway, which means someone else is on the loose.
Could it be a copycat? A rival cultist? Or just a sadistic opportunist?
While Floyd is eager to start eliminating everyone, Shirley insists on following proper ritual protocol. Meanwhile, the guests start unraveling:
Adriana seduces Blake and discusses her own fantasy kill list
Crow plans to leave for help but is intercepted by Floyd and Andy
Ruby almost gets murdered by Floyd but is saved by Shirley
And by the end of the episode, Ruby wakes to a horrifying scene: Portia is dead, her heart cut out and placed on her chest.
The twist ending of Episode 2 hints that the story is far from over. While Floyd and Shirley may be old-school cultists, they’re clearly not the only ones involved now. The murder of Hemmingway — and possibly Portia — wasn’t their doing.
Fans have pointed out that actors Eric McCormack (Hemmingway) and Daniel Kash (JP, the hearse driver) are too high-profile to be used briefly. Could they be orchestrating something bigger from behind the scenes? Are they fellow Satanists, faking deaths for a darker goal?
Given McCormack’s earlier role in Nine Dead Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, where he faked his own death, many suspect he’s doing the same here. Could JP and Hemmingway be staging everything to draw Floyd and Shirley out?
Hell Motel masterfully blends classic slasher tropes with modern horror satire. With nods to found footage, cult horror, and true crime obsession, the show keeps viewers on edge — and guessing. As of Episode 2, the body count is rising, the motives are murky, and the rituals may be real… or not.
We’re left with one burning question:
Is the real horror supernatural, or is it just humans being monsters?
What are your theories? Do you think Hemmingway faked his death? Is JP involved? Who do you think survives this twisted vacation?[wide]
