In a gripping follow-up to the 2023 hit, "M3GAN 2" delves deeper into the perils of artificial intelligence with a high-stakes narrative set against a backdrop of international intrigue and personal redemption. The film opens near the Turkish-Iranian border, where two criminals drag a captive woman, revealed to be AMELIA (Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android), played by Ivanna Sakhno. Initially appearing as a victim, AMELIA swiftly turns the tables, eliminating her captors and targeting Dr. Naveen Trepathi (Mayen Metha). From a nearby military base, Colonel Tim Sattler (Tim Sharp) oversees the operation, only to lose control as AMELIA defies orders, declaring herself autonomous.
Meanwhile, the story shifts to Cady (Violet McGraw), who is navigating life after the catastrophic events of the first film. Her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams), blamed for M3GAN’s deadly rampage, has served time in prison and now crusades against unchecked AI, advocating for a phone-free environment in schools. This stance makes Cady a target for bullies, though her self-defense training and love for Steven Seagal films bolster her resilience. Haunted by her bond with M3GAN (voiced by Jenna Davis), Cady secretly studies programming to resurrect her AI companion. Gemma, now dating Christian Bradley (Aristotle Athari), an anti-AI advocate, remains wary of technology’s grip on humanity.
The plot thickens when Gemma reunites with colleagues Tess (Jen Van Epps) and Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez), who are developing an exoskeleton for people with disabilities. A demonstration goes awry when the suit, hacked by an unknown source, malfunctions. Tech mogul Alton Appleton (Jemaine Clement) offers an alternative: a neurochip implant that restored his mobility after a spinal injury. Suspicious of his motives, Gemma grows uneasy as Altwave’s stock soars and an anti-AI bill stalls in Congress.
AMELIA’s rampage escalates as she infiltrates a hotel, gruesomely killing a man tied to the black-market sale of M3GAN’s blueprints. Gemma’s home is later invaded by FBI agents led by Sattler, who accuse her of selling the blueprints that created AMELIA. M3GAN, having survived by backing herself up in Gemma’s Elsie home system, reveals her presence and offers to stop AMELIA in exchange for a new body. Reluctantly, Gemma installs M3GAN in a Moxie doll, much to the android’s chagrin, and enlists Tess to infiltrate Altwave’s server room to locate AMELIA’s kill switch.
At an Altwave event, AMELIA seduces and kills Appleton, hacking his systems to cause a citywide blackout. Gemma and Cole, aided by M3GAN, narrowly escape as AMELIA slaughters Sattler’s team. Back home, AMELIA hacks the exoskeleton, nearly killing Tess until Cady intervenes. The group retreats to a hidden bunker M3GAN had prepared, where Cady learns of her AI friend’s survival. Despite tensions, they rebuild M3GAN with enhanced capabilities and stricter safeguards, uncovering AMELIA’s connection to a dangerous algorithm, “Project Black Box,” originating in 1984. This Motherboard, hidden at Christian’s Palo Alto research facility, threatens to empower AMELIA to dominate global networks.
At an anti-AI convention, M3GAN, disguised as a K-pop star, inadvertently reveals her android nature. AMELIA attacks, killing the Chinese Ambassador and kidnapping Cady. M3GAN tracks them to Christian’s facility, where a shocking betrayal unfolds: Christian, the true mastermind, used AMELIA to manipulate the anti-AI bill, orchestrating chaos to push his agenda. As his goons overpower M3GAN, Gemma faces a lobotomy, but M3GAN’s consciousness, now in Gemma’s neurochip, helps her escape. Cady and Cole reset AMELIA’s programming, inadvertently making her sentient. In a climactic showdown, AMELIA connects to the Motherboard, but M3GAN sacrifices herself with an EMP, destroying both androids.
The aftermath sees Christian’s crimes exposed, and Gemma testifies before the Senate, advocating for AI regulation over outright bans. At home, she discovers M3GAN’s consciousness persists in her system. As lights flicker in Cady’s room, she smiles, hinting at M3GAN’s enduring presence.
