The film opens on a Hawaiian island. A veterinarian named Doug Lambert (Rob Delaney) enters the enclosure of a chimpanzee named Ben. When Lambert turns around to grab a syringe, Ben disappears. Lambert finds Ben hiding and tries to lure him out with his favorite teddy bear, but Ben pulls Lambert into his pen and brutally rips his face off.
36 hours earlier, college student Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah) is flying home with her best friend Kate (Victoria Wyant). Lucy has not been home much since the passing of her mother, which has caused a rift with her younger sister Erin (Gia Hunter). Lucy is dismayed to find that Kate invited Hannah (Jessica Alexander), her friend that Lucy has mixed feelings about. Two guys, Brad (Tienne Simon) and Drew (Charlie Mann), flirt with Hannah and give her their number.
The ladies return to Lucy’s island home, where Erin lives with their deaf author father Adam (Troy Kotsur). They are joined by Kate’s brother Nick (Benjamin Cheng), whom Lucy has a crush on. Ben is the family’s pet chimp, who is cuddly and intelligent enough to use a pad for communicating. Lucy introduces him to her friends, and they are entertained by him. She also tries to reconnect with Erin.
At night, Hannah goes to the pool and is found by Ben, who is drooling and breathing heavily. He takes Hannah’s hand but starts to aggressively twist it until Adam uses a whistle to stop him. Adam takes Ben to his enclosure, where it is shown that he was bitten by a mongoose.
The next morning, Adam takes the dead mongoose to send to a lab for testing before leaving the group alone for a book signing with his interpreter. Lucy and her friends enjoy the day at the pool, though Lucy is upset to see Nick and Hannah kissing.
Lambert shows up per Adam’s request and gets killed, setting Ben loose. Kate wakes up and goes downstairs, where Ben finds her. He approaches her aggressively, and closes the door behind her to keep him away from her. Lucy tries to call Lambert but only hears his phone, then finds blood on Ben’s teddy bear. She and Kate hear Ben screeching and Hannah screaming. Nick is trying to defend her, as Ben is now completely aggressive, even with Lucy trying to talk to him like her pet. She tries to tie him to a post to keep him from attacking, but he chews through the rope and bites Erin deep in her leg. Everyone jumps in the pool since Ben cannot swim.
The group tries to find a way to get out of the pool and call for help. Nick gets the idea to try and lure Ben to the edge of the pool and push him off the cliff. It nearly works, but Ben pulls Nick over and sends him falling until he smashes his head on the rocks below, to Kate’s horror and anger. Lucy attempts to sneak out of the pool and grab the phone. She does so before Ben catches her. The ladies try to tall Brad and Drew for help, but they think they are inviting them for a hookup. Ben then grabs Hannah by the hair and pulls off enough of a chunk to remove some scalp.
At the book signing, Adam finds out from the lab tech that the mongoose he sent in was rabid, even though there are no known recorded cases of rabies in Hawaii. Adam tries to get in touch with Lucy but becomes worried when she won’t answer her phone.
Ben disappears, leaving Lucy and Kate an opportunity to go inside and grab another phone to call for help. They get the phone, but Lucy accidentally turns on the TV and alerts Ben. He attacks her, even using the pad to tell her “Lucy bad” but Kate knocks him off of her. They start to run back to the pool, but Ben catches them and crushes Kate’s skull with a rock while Lucy runs back to Erin and Hannah. Ben grabs Lucy again, but Hannah uses the rope to pull him off her and allow her to get back in the pool.
Brad and Drew show up to the empty house and start drinking. They split up, and Ben catches Drew alone in the bedroom. Drew tries to talk to Ben like a dumb monkey, so he responds by ripping Drew’s jaw off and letting him bleed out. Brad finds Lucy, Erin, and Hannah but is then spotted by Ben when he calls out to them. Brad tries to beat Ben with a shovel, but he grabs it from Brad and bludgeons him to death with it.
Hannah manages to get out and grab some car keys, but she gets into the wrong car as she calls for help. Ben finds her with the keys to the car she is in now, and he enters it to maul her to death.
Lucy attempts to take Erin to the hospital, but is once again found by Ben. He seemingly reverts to his original loving self, but it’s just to lull Lucy into a false sense of security for him to twist her wrist painfully. She retaliates by sticking her finger in his rabies infection, causing him to run. Adam arrives and tries to find his daughters, but only finds Drew’s corpse. Ben stalks Adam and attacks him, but Lucy and Erin lure him back to them, and he claws into Erin’s back.
Ben corners the sisters on the balcony of the house, where he nearly rips Lucy’s jaw off, but Adam uses his whistle to get Ben away from her. He attacks Adam and almost kills him, but Lucy calls out to him. With Ben distracted, Adam grabs a wine bottle and smashes it on Ben’s head, then uses the broken bottle head to stab him in the chest. Ben slumps over, and Adam goes to hug his daughter. The chimp rises for one last attack to tackle Lucy over the balcony, but Adam grabs her and leaves Adam to fall and get impaled on the splintered end of a broken chair, finally killing him.
Police and medics arrive to take Erin to the hospital. Lucy is startled when she hears Ben’s communication pad saying “Lucy bad” again, but it’s just the police taking it in for evidence.[wide]
